Destiny guy

Ok, so tell me if this is weird. The past few days or weeks, strange coincidences have been occurring around me. For instance, I was driving around one night and I was thinking, for some reason, about Obama's main speech writer, Jon Favreau (not the director/actor) and how it was cool that he is so young and so important, but that I hadn't really read much about him or how he got to the position he's in now. I thought that maybe a nice feature story was in order, but for all of my obsessive political readings, I hadn't come across anything of the sort. What do I know it, but the next day, I come across this article. Weird, I thought.

There was one other significant coincidence that happened just after that, but it's escaping me right now. But there were two today that continued the trend. I have never seen the Goonies until tonight, but earlier today, I was looking at law school message boards and someone's avatar picture thing was this guy Ok, I thought, that's a little creepy, I wonder what that guy is from. Not two hours later, as I sat down to watch the movie, I heard "Hey you guys!" come from the very mouth of the creature that had showed up in the message board a few hours earlier.

The last strange occurrence wasn't quite as crazy, but I had just had a passing thought about one of my friends from school - nothing very profound, but I don't talk to her too much or have any other reason to think of her that moment but for random chance. I go to check my facebook account and she sent me a message.

I guess the point of all of this is probably that I'm bored and am trying to piece together random bits as if there is some master plan or that I'm somehow dictating how the world works. If that's the case, then I should start thinking about more profound subjects than Obama's speechwriter or the guy from the Goonies. My thoughts will now focus on things like world peace, ending poverty, and marrying a sugar momma ;o)

Wait, listed

So I got waitlisted today at the UMN Law School.

I was a little surprised, but I think law schools across the board may be pretty conservative this year for two reasons:

1. More applicants due to the economy tanking. There is a correlation between economic hardship and law school applicants - my consultant told me that she had two clients, a husband and wife, who used to work for Lehman Bros and AIG. Enough said.

2. Schools are taking fewer applicants due to too many students accepting seats in previous years' classes.

I think the first reason may be stronger, but I'm sure it's a combination of those and more factors. Or I'm just looking to rationalize why I got waitlisted. It's plausible.

On the other hand, I got into the University of Colorado - Boulder today! They were higher on my list because of their really good environmental law program (ranked 4th), their location (Boulder, c'mon!), and their overall strength ~30th overall. And they got a beautiful new LEED certified law building. I think I could get used to living in a place surrounded by mountains with sunshine 300 days of the year... kind of like Houghton, except the opposite.

I've also gotten into Boston College and UC-Davis. So that covers the West Coast, the Mountains, and the East Coast. I have no idea which one I'd chose if it was between these three. The bad (I guess good) news is that I'll have to chose between probably 3-4 more, so if you have any suggestions, speak up!!!!

Merry Christmas - A Long Overdue Update

After a long hiatus, I'll be returning to posting starting, well, now. In about two weeks, I'll be moving out to our nation's capitol to work for the Union of Concerned Scientists. I'll be gone until the end of July, so I probably won't be able to keep all my friends and relatives abreast of what I'm up to without just putting it all on this blog. So, if you are interested in my impressions of DC, some of the work I'll be doing, or some "insider" scoop on upcoming legislation, check back regularly! And if anyone knows friends out there, let me know!

I'll be sure to say 'hi' to President Obama ;o)
